Cracks in walls before painting: which ones you can fix and how

By PT Enterprises, Gwalior ·

Berger HomeShield Advanced Latex Plus pack
Should I repair cracks before painting? Yes. Paint does not hide cracks for long. Hairline and plaster cracks can be opened, filled with a suitable filler or a polymer mortar such as one made with Berger HomeShield Advanced Latex Plus, and primed before painting. Wide, diagonal or growing cracks need an engineer’s opinion first.

Three kinds of cracks

  • Hairline cracks: fine surface lines from shrinkage or heat, common on sun-facing walls in Gwalior
  • Plaster cracks: wider, sometimes with hollow plaster around them
  • Structural cracks: diagonal from door and window corners, wider than a few millimetres, or growing over time

Repairing the common ones

  1. Rake the crack out into a V and remove loose material.
  2. Fill hairline cracks with crack filler; fill plaster cracks with polymer-modified mortar or Berger HomeShield Repairo.
  3. Replaster hollow areas.
  4. Sand, prime the repair and blend with putty if needed.
  5. Paint the full wall so the repair does not show.

Outside walls

On exteriors, an elastomeric finish such as Berger WeatherCoat Long Life Flexo helps bridge fine cracks that open with heat. It does not replace repair of wider cracks.

Before the painter starts: a short checklist

  • Fix leaks and damp first; paint will not stop water coming through a wall
  • Scrape loose and flaking paint; sand glossy patches so the new coat grips
  • Fill cracks, then prime repaired spots and any bare plaster
  • Use putty only where the wall is uneven, and sand it smooth
  • Cover floors and furniture; remove switch plates and fittings
  • Note the shade code of every tin, so a later top-up matches

Questions to ask your painter before work starts

  • Which walls need scraping, primer or putty, and which do not?
  • How many coats of each product are included in the price?
  • Who supplies material, and will you show me the sealed tins and shade codes?
  • How will furniture, floors and fittings be protected?
  • How many days will the job take, and how long between coats?
