Is wall putty necessary before painting?

By PT Enterprises, Gwalior ·

Berger Silk Acrylic Putty pack
Do I need putty before painting? Not always. Putty fills dents and gives a smooth base for emulsion, so it is worth it on rough new plaster and for sheen or luxury finishes. On walls that are already smooth and sound, a primer and two coats of paint may be enough. Putty is not waterproofing and should never cover damp.

When putty makes sense

  • New plaster that is rough or wavy
  • Walls getting a sheen or luxury emulsion, which shows defects
  • Repaired areas that need blending with the rest of the wall
  • Interior walls where a very smooth look is wanted

When you can skip it

  • Sound, smooth walls being repainted in a matt finish
  • Exterior walls, where an exterior primer and emulsion go directly on plaster
  • Store rooms and utility areas where looks matter less

Choosing a putty

Berger Bison Wall Putty is a cement-based powder for most walls. Berger Happy Wall Acrylic Putty is a ready acrylic putty for smooth interiors. Berger Silk Acrylic Putty is Berger’s base under luxury emulsions. Apply thin coats, sand smooth, wipe the dust and prime before the finish coats.

Before the painter starts: a short checklist

  • Fix leaks and damp first; paint will not stop water coming through a wall
  • Scrape loose and flaking paint; sand glossy patches so the new coat grips
  • Fill cracks, then prime repaired spots and any bare plaster
  • Use putty only where the wall is uneven, and sand it smooth
  • Cover floors and furniture; remove switch plates and fittings
  • Note the shade code of every tin, so a later top-up matches

Questions to ask your painter before work starts

  • Which walls need scraping, primer or putty, and which do not?
  • How many coats of each product are included in the price?
  • Who supplies material, and will you show me the sealed tins and shade codes?
  • How will furniture, floors and fittings be protected?
  • How many days will the job take, and how long between coats?

Useful next steps

Frequently asked questions

Can too much putty cause problems?

Thick putty layers can crack or soften with moisture. Thin coats are better.

Can putty go on damp walls?

No. Fix damp first; putty traps moisture and fails.

How much putty will I need?

It depends on how uneven the wall is. A site visit gives a better estimate.
