Refreshing wooden doors and furniture: polish, stain and fill

By PT Enterprises, Gwalior ·

Berger Woodkeeper Ezee Hand Polish pack
How do I refresh old wooden doors? Clean off grime, sand lightly, fill dents with a wood filler such as Berger Woodkeeper Fill-O-Dent, even out the colour with Berger Woodkeeper Wood Stainer if needed, and finish with a polish such as Berger Woodkeeper Ezee Hand Polish, or a PU like Berger Woodkeeper 1K PU for harder wear and exterior doors.

Check the wood first

  • Termite damage or soft wood needs repair before any finish
  • Old polish that is flaking should be sanded off
  • Grease near handles must be cleaned off
  • Exterior doors in sun need a finish rated for outdoor use

Step by step

  1. Clean and dry the surface.
  2. Sand along the grain with fine sandpaper.
  3. Fill dents and cracks; sand smooth when dry.
  4. Apply stain evenly if you want a deeper or uniform colour.
  5. Apply the finish in thin coats, sanding lightly between coats if the data sheet says so.

Timing in the Gwalior region

Dry months are best. In the monsoon, humid air slows drying and can cloud some finishes. In peak summer, work in the shade and avoid direct sun on fresh polish.

Before the painter starts: a short checklist

  • Fix leaks and damp first; paint will not stop water coming through a wall
  • Scrape loose and flaking paint; sand glossy patches so the new coat grips
  • Fill cracks, then prime repaired spots and any bare plaster
  • Use putty only where the wall is uneven, and sand it smooth
  • Cover floors and furniture; remove switch plates and fittings
  • Note the shade code of every tin, so a later top-up matches

Questions to ask your painter before work starts

  • Which walls need scraping, primer or putty, and which do not?
  • How many coats of each product are included in the price?
  • Who supplies material, and will you show me the sealed tins and shade codes?
  • How will furniture, floors and fittings be protected?
  • How many days will the job take, and how long between coats?
