Painting while you live in the house: low smell and less disruption
Plan room by room
- Start with rooms the family uses least.
- Move people into another room while one is painted and dries.
- Keep one bathroom and the kitchen usable at all times.
- Leave the living room for last.
Choosing products
Water-based emulsions and primers are the normal choice for walls and have a mild smell. Solvent-based enamels, thinners and some wood finishes smell much stronger. Do door and grill enamel work on a day when windows can stay open, and keep children, elders and anyone with breathing problems away from those areas until the smell clears. For indoor furniture, low-smell options such as Berger Melamine 24 Carat exist.
Ventilation and clean-up
- Keep windows open and use fans to move air out
- Close paint tins between use
- Clean brushes outside the living area
- Store leftover paint away from kitchens and bedrooms
Before the painter starts: a short checklist
- Fix leaks and damp first; paint will not stop water coming through a wall
- Scrape loose and flaking paint; sand glossy patches so the new coat grips
- Fill cracks, then prime repaired spots and any bare plaster
- Use putty only where the wall is uneven, and sand it smooth
- Cover floors and furniture; remove switch plates and fittings
