Bathroom seepage into the next room: causes and the right fix

Find where the water comes from

Look at the height of the patch. Damp near the floor usually means the bathroom floor or the joint between floor and wall. A patch higher up often lines up with a concealed pipe or the shower mixer. A patch that grows only when the bathroom is used points to the shower area or a broken tile joint. A plumber can pressure test concealed pipes if you suspect a leak inside the wall.

Repair inside the bathroom

• Fix leaking pipes and fittings first.
• Re-grout or seal open tile joints, especially in the shower area and along the floor edge.
• Where tiles must be lifted, apply a two-component waterproofing such as Berger HomeShield Latex Shield 2K on the floor and the lower part of the walls before re-tiling.
• For cracks in the base, a repair mortar made with Berger HomeShield Advanced Latex Plus bonds better than plain cement.

Then treat the damp wall

Let the affected wall dry out. In Gwalior’s dry months this is quicker, but thick walls can still take weeks. Scrape off blistered paint and putty, apply a damp-resistant primer such as Berger HomeShield Dampstop Duo, and repaint. A washable finish like Berger Easy Clean is a good choice for rooms next to wet areas.

• Find where the water enters before choosing a product

• Clean off moss, dust, loose plaster and old peeling coats
• Open and fill cracks; seal joints, pipe entries and parapet corners
• Follow the coat count and curing time on the data sheet
• Paint only after the waterproofing has cured

Signs that the problem needs an expert look

• The damp patch keeps growing after you have repaired the obvious cause
• Plaster sounds hollow when tapped, or pieces fall off
• Cracks are wider than a few millimetres or run diagonally from window and door corners
• Water appears in a room with no bathroom, tank or pipe nearby
• Steel bars are visible or rust stains run down the concrete

These can point to structural movement or hidden leaks. Get the source checked before spending on coatings.

The right season for waterproofing in this region

Across Gwalior, Morena, Bhind and the other districts, the useful window is the dry period from March to June, before the July rains. Roofs and walls are dry, coatings cure properly and you can test the work before the monsoon. Small repairs can be done in October and November after the rains, when walls have dried out. Avoid starting major waterproofing in July and August: wet surfaces are the most common reason coatings fail early.
