Waterproofing and damp
White salt patches on walls: what causes them and how to stop them

Where salt patches show up
- The lower metre of ground floor walls, from moisture rising out of the ground
- Walls next to bathrooms, kitchens and water tanks
- New plaster that has not dried fully before painting
- Exterior walls where rain soaks in through cracks
Older houses in Gwalior and many homes in villages across Bhind and Morena show this on the ground floor, especially after the monsoon.
Treat the cause before the surface
If moisture keeps coming, salts keep coming. Fix leaking pipes and roof drains, repair exterior cracks, and keep soil and plant beds from piling up against walls. For new buildings, a damp-proof course at plinth level stops ground moisture rising; on existing homes, the practical steps are drainage, repairs and the right primer.

Step by step on an affected wall
- Scrape off loose paint and putty from the affected area and a little beyond it.
- Brush off the salt with a dry stiff brush. Do not wash it, which pushes salt back in.
- Let the wall dry. Brush again if new salt appears.
- Apply a damp and alkali resistant primer such as Berger HomeShield Dampstop Duo. On exterior walls, Berger HomeShield Seal-O-Prime or Berger Dampstop Advanced adds protection.
- Repair putty only where needed, then paint.
Set expectations
On a wall that stays damp from the ground, salts may reappear over time even after good treatment. That is why we look at the source during our site visit in Gwalior city before recommending products.

Before any waterproofing job
- Find where the water enters before choosing a product
- Let the surface dry fully; most coatings fail on wet substrates
- Clean off moss, dust, loose plaster and old peeling coats
- Open and fill cracks; seal joints, pipe entries and parapet corners
- Follow the coat count and curing time on the data sheet
- Paint only after the waterproofing has cured
Signs that the problem needs an expert look
- The damp patch keeps growing after you have repaired the obvious cause
- Plaster sounds hollow when tapped, or pieces fall off
- Cracks are wider than a few millimetres or run diagonally from window and door corners
- Water appears in a room with no bathroom, tank or pipe nearby
- Steel bars are visible or rust stains run down the concrete
These can point to structural movement or hidden leaks. Get the source checked before spending on coatings.
The right season for waterproofing in this region
Across Gwalior, Morena, Bhind and the other districts, the useful window is the dry period from March to June, before the July rains. Roofs and walls are dry, coatings cure properly and you can test the work before the monsoon. Small repairs can be done in October and November after the rains, when walls have dried out. Avoid starting major waterproofing in July and August: wet surfaces are the most common reason coatings fail early.

It is mainly a moisture problem that damages paint and plaster over time. Treating the moisture also protects the wall.
Can putty hide salt patches?
No. Salts push through putty and paint. Remove them and use a suitable primer.
Which primer should I buy?
For interior walls with a damp history, Dampstop Duo is commonly used. Call +91 77559 81105 and describe the wall for advice.
