Repairing roof cracks before waterproofing: what to fix first
Types of roof cracks you will see
- Hairline cracks in the top screed from daily heating and cooling
- Wider cracks along the parapet joint
- Cracks around pipes, drain outlets and water tank stands
- Broken or hollow screed patches that sound dull when tapped
How to repair them
- Cut each crack open into a small V so the filler can grip.
- Brush out dust and wet the surface lightly if the product asks for it.
- Fill with a polymer-modified mortar or Berger HomeShield Repairo; build up broken edges in layers.
- Round off the roof to parapet corner with mortar.
- Cure the repairs as instructed before coating.
Then coat the whole roof
After repairs, apply a continuous coating over the entire roof, not just the patches. A liquid membrane such as Berger HomeShield PU Roofkoat forms a seamless layer that moves with the slab. Doing this between March and June gives the best result in Gwalior, Morena and Bhind.
Before any waterproofing job
- Find where the water enters before choosing a product
- Let the surface dry fully; most coatings fail on wet substrates
- Clean off moss, dust, loose plaster and old peeling coats
- Open and fill cracks; seal joints, pipe entries and parapet corners
- Follow the coat count and curing time on the data sheet
- Paint only after the waterproofing has cured

The right season for waterproofing in this region
Across Gwalior, Morena, Bhind and the other districts, the useful window is the dry period from March to June, before the July rains. Roofs and walls are dry, coatings cure properly and you can test the work before the monsoon. Small repairs can be done in October and November after the rains, when walls have dried out. Avoid starting major waterproofing in July and August: wet surfaces are the most common reason coatings fail early.

Can I just fill cracks with white cement?
White cement alone is brittle and often cracks again with heat. A polymer-modified repair mortar bonds and flexes better.
How wide a crack can I repair myself?
Hairline and small cracks are routine. Wide or growing cracks, or cracks in beams, should be checked by an engineer first.
