Roof waterproofing before the monsoon in Gwalior: a step by step plan

When should I waterproof my roof in Gwalior? Between March and June, when the slab is fully dry and before the July rains. Clean the roof, repair cracks and broken screed, seal parapet joints and pipe openings, then apply a roof coating such as Berger HomeShield Roof Kool & Seal or Berger HomeShield PU Roofkoat in the number of coats the data sheet asks for.

Why Gwalior roofs leak

A flat roof here goes from 45°C afternoons in May to heavy rain in July. The slab expands and contracts every day, and fine cracks open in the screed and along the joint between roof and parapet wall. Water also sits in low spots where the slope is poor. Most leaks we see in Gwalior, Morena and Bhind come from these three places: cracks, the parapet joint and blocked or badly sealed drain outlets.

Prepare the roof first

  1. Sweep off dust, moss and loose material. Remove old peeling coatings.
  2. Open up cracks with a chisel and fill them; for broken screed and edges, a ready mortar such as Berger HomeShield Repairo helps.
  3. Round off the corner between roof and parapet with mortar so the coating can bridge it.
  4. Clean drain outlets and make sure water flows to them.
  5. Let the roof dry completely. A damp slab is the most common reason a coating lifts.

Choosing the coating

Berger HomeShield Roof Kool & Seal is an elastomeric coating that also reflects heat, useful on roofs above bedrooms that get very hot. Berger HomeShield PU Roofkoat is a PU-modified liquid membrane for exposed terraces and roofs with movement cracks. Berger Dampstop Advanced suits roofs and walls where the problem is general seepage rather than open cracks. Our waterproofing page explains the full range.

Mistakes that waste the money

  • Coating over cracks without filling them
  • Skipping the parapet joint and drain outlets, where most leaks start
  • Applying on a wet or dewy slab
  • Putting one thick coat instead of the coats the data sheet specifies
  • Walking on or loading the roof before the coating has cured

Before any waterproofing job

  • Find where the water enters before choosing a product
  • Let the surface dry fully; most coatings fail on wet substrates
  • Clean off moss, dust, loose plaster and old peeling coats
  • Open and fill cracks; seal joints, pipe entries and parapet corners
  • Follow the coat count and curing time on the data sheet
  • Paint only after the waterproofing has cured

Signs that the problem needs an expert look

  • The damp patch keeps growing after you have repaired the obvious cause
  • Plaster sounds hollow when tapped, or pieces fall off
  • Cracks are wider than a few millimetres or run diagonally from window and door corners
  • Water appears in a room with no bathroom, tank or pipe nearby
  • Steel bars are visible or rust stains run down the concrete

These can point to structural movement or hidden leaks. Get the source checked before spending on coatings.

The right season for waterproofing in this region

Across Gwalior, Morena, Bhind and the other districts, the useful window is the dry period from March to June, before the July rains. Roofs and walls are dry, coatings cure properly and you can test the work before the monsoon. Small repairs can be done in October and November after the rains, when walls have dried out. Avoid starting major waterproofing in July and August: wet surfaces are the most common reason coatings fail early.
