Diwali house painting checklist for Gwalior families
Four to six weeks before Diwali
- Walk through the house and list rooms, doors, grills and the exterior you want done this year.
- Pick shades from a Berger shade card or our colour consultation. Write down the shade codes.
- Book a painter early. September and October are the busiest months in the region.
- In Gwalior city, ask for a free site visit to fix quantities.
Two to three weeks before
- Buy paint, putty, primer, sandpaper, masking tape and rollers together. Running out mid-job costs a day.
- Move furniture to the centre of rooms and cover it. Remove switch plates and curtain rods.
- Start with bedrooms and passages, then the kitchen, and finish with the living room.
Doors, windows and grills
Fresh walls next to dull doors look unfinished. Main doors and grills take an enamel such as Berger Luxol Hi-Gloss, which needs a dry day and time to harden, so do them early, not on the last evening. Polished wooden doors can be refreshed with Berger Woodkeeper Ezee Hand Polish.
If the budget is tight this year
You do not have to repaint every wall. Many families in Gwalior paint the living room, the entrance and the main door fresh each Diwali, and do bedrooms every second or third year. Washing walls and touching up marks can carry a sound emulsion for another season. Spend first on rooms that guests see and on anything with damp or peeling paint, because those get worse if left.
The last week
Leave only touch-ups for the final days. Fresh emulsion needs time before it can be washed, so do not scrub newly painted walls while cleaning for the festival. Keep one small tin of each shade for marks left by lamps, rangoli colours and decorations.
Before the painter starts: a short checklist
- Fix leaks and damp first; paint will not stop water coming through a wall
- Scrape loose and flaking paint; sand glossy patches so the new coat grips
- Fill cracks, then prime repaired spots and any bare plaster
- Use putty only where the wall is uneven, and sand it smooth
- Cover floors and furniture; remove switch plates and fittings
- Note the shade code of every tin, so a later top-up matches
