House painting
Best exterior paint for Gwalior’s summer heat and dust

What Gwalior weather does to outside walls
From April to June, temperatures in Gwalior regularly go above 45°C. West and south facing walls take direct sun for most of the afternoon. Hot, dry winds carry fine dust before the monsoon, and then July to September brings heavy rain on walls that have just been baked. Paint on these walls has to cope with heat expansion, dust settling on a warm surface, and water.
This is why a cheap interior emulsion used outside fades and chalks within a season or two, and why a dark shade on a sun-facing wall looks patchy faster.
Three choices that matter more than brand
- Shade: light colours reflect more sunlight and show less fading. Keep deep colours for small trims and borders.
- Product type: use a true exterior emulsion. Heat-reflective and anti-dust variants are worth the extra cost on the hottest faces of the house.
- Surface preparation: wash off dust and algae, fill cracks and use an exterior primer. Paint does not stick well to a dusty wall, whatever the brand.

Do not forget the roof
On a flat RCC roof, a large share of the heat that reaches a top-floor room comes through the slab. A reflective roof coating such as Berger HomeShield Roof Kool & Seal is meant to reduce heat gain and seal the roof against water at the same time. On houses in Gwalior, Morena and Bhind, we often suggest doing the roof and the exterior walls in the same season, before the rains.
When to paint the exterior
The best window in this region is October to March. Avoid painting in the peak afternoon heat of May and June, because paint dries too fast and can show lap marks, and avoid the monsoon months when walls stay damp. If work must happen in summer, paint the sunny faces early in the morning.

Before the painter starts: a short checklist
- Fix leaks and damp first; paint will not stop water coming through a wall
- Scrape loose and flaking paint; sand glossy patches so the new coat grips
- Fill cracks, then prime repaired spots and any bare plaster
- Use putty only where the wall is uneven, and sand it smooth
- Cover floors and furniture; remove switch plates and fittings
- Note the shade code of every tin, so a later top-up matches
Questions to ask your painter before work starts
- Which walls need scraping, primer or putty, and which do not?
- How many coats of each product are included in the price?
- Who supplies material, and will you show me the sealed tins and shade codes?
- How will furniture, floors and fittings be protected?
- How many days will the job take, and how long between coats?

Frequently asked questions
Is a heat-reflective paint worth it for a Gwalior house?
On walls that face the afternoon sun and on top-floor rooms, many homeowners find it useful. For walls that stay shaded, a standard WeatherCoat or Walmasta emulsion is usually enough.
Which shades fade the least?
Whites, creams, light greys and pale yellows hold up best in strong sun. Dark reds, blues and greens fade faster on south and west facing walls.
Can I paint over old cement paint?
Yes, after you brush off the loose powder and apply an exterior primer. Call +91 77559 81105 and we can check the wall for you in Gwalior city.
