Painting iron gates and window grills so they do not rust

Why gates and grills rust so quickly here
Main gates, terrace railings and window grills take everything at once: dust that holds moisture, monsoon rain, dew in winter and daily hand contact. Once water gets under a chipped spot, rust spreads under the paint and lifts it. Homes near open fields in Morena, Bhind and Shivpuri also see more wind-blown dust on metal.
Preparation decides the result
- Scrape off loose paint and wire-brush or sand the rust.
- Wipe the metal clean and dry. Do not paint on a dewy morning.
- Apply a coat of red oxide or anti-corrosive metal primer on the same day, before fresh rust forms.
- For harsher conditions or industrial gates, an epoxy primer such as Berger Luxol QD 1K Epoxy Primer gives stronger protection.

Choosing the enamel
Berger Luxol Hi-Gloss gives a high-gloss, easy-to-wipe finish, popular for main gates. Berger Luxol Satin Enamel has a softer sheen if you prefer less shine. For a lower budget on interior grills and small items, Berger Butterfly GP Enamel is an option. Apply two thin coats rather than one thick one, which can sag and dry slowly.
Timing and care
Paint metal in dry weather, ideally between October and March in this region. Let each coat dry properly before the next. After the monsoon, check for chips and touch them up quickly before rust spreads.

Before the painter starts: a short checklist
- Fix leaks and damp first; paint will not stop water coming through a wall
- Scrape loose and flaking paint; sand glossy patches so the new coat grips
- Fill cracks, then prime repaired spots and any bare plaster
- Use putty only where the wall is uneven, and sand it smooth
- Cover floors and furniture; remove switch plates and fittings
- Note the shade code of every tin, so a later top-up matches
Questions to ask your painter before work starts
- Which walls need scraping, primer or putty, and which do not?
- How many coats of each product are included in the price?
- Who supplies material, and will you show me the sealed tins and shade codes?
- How will furniture, floors and fittings be protected?
- How many days will the job take, and how long between coats?
