Estimating paint quantities for a site: a contractor’s method
Take-off by system
- Interior walls and ceilings: primer, putty, two coats of emulsion
- Exterior walls: exterior primer, two coats of exterior emulsion
- Wet areas: waterproofing under tiles
- Metal: primer and enamel by running metre or area
- Wood: primer or sealer and finish
Turning area into litres
- Area per system × number of coats.
- Divide by the coverage on the data sheet for that product.
- Adjust for rough or porous surfaces.
- Add a small margin for wastage and touch-ups.
- Round to pack sizes painters can carry.
Order by phase

Before the painter starts: a short checklist
- Fix leaks and damp first; paint will not stop water coming through a wall
