How to choose a colour from a shade card without regret

Why colours change on the wall
A small chip looks darker and less intense than the same colour across a whole wall. Light from windows, tube lights and LED lamps also shifts how colours look. That is why sampling on your own wall matters.
A simple method
- Shortlist three shades from the same family.
- Hold the shade card against the wall at different times of day.
- Choose one step lighter for big walls.
- Paint a small patch and live with it for a day.
- Write down the shade code and product.

Use the store's help
At our Gwalior store we can show fan decks and painted samples, and tint a small quantity for testing. The computerised record means the same shade can be repeated later.
Before the painter starts: a short checklist
- Fix leaks and damp first; paint will not stop water coming through a wall
- Scrape loose and flaking paint; sand glossy patches so the new coat grips
- Fill cracks, then prime repaired spots and any bare plaster
- Use putty only where the wall is uneven, and sand it smooth
- Cover floors and furniture; remove switch plates and fittings
- Note the shade code of every tin, so a later top-up matches
How light in Gwalior homes changes colour
The same shade can look very different from room to room. Rooms facing south and west get strong, warm afternoon light in Gwalior, which makes warm colours look even warmer. North-facing rooms get softer, cooler light, so cool greys and blues can feel cold there. Tube lights add a slight blue tone, while warm LED bulbs add yellow. Before deciding, look at your shortlisted shades in the actual room in the morning, afternoon and at night, under the lights you use. A shade that looks right in all three is a safe choice.
Keep a record of your shade codes
Write the product name and shade code for every room in a notebook or inside a cupboard door. With computerised tinting, the same code can be mixed again at our store or at any Berger dealer we supply, which makes touch-ups and future repaints simple.
