How many coats of paint does a wall need?

By PT Enterprises, Gwalior ·

Berger Easy Clean Silky Touch pack
How many coats of paint are needed? On a sound, previously painted wall in a similar shade, two coats of emulsion are usual. New plaster needs a primer coat first, and often putty. A big change from dark to light can need a third coat. Always follow the coat count on the product’s data sheet.

Typical coat counts

SituationUsual system
Repaint, same or similar shadeTwo coats of emulsion
Repaint, dark to lightPrimer or an extra coat, then two coats
New plasterPrimer, putty if needed, primer again if specified, two coats
Patched or repaired areasSpot primer, then full coats over the wall

Why one coat is rarely enough

A single coat often looks fine wet but dries patchy, especially over putty patches or a different old colour. The second coat evens out the colour and builds the film that gives the paint its washability and life. Thinning paint too much to stretch it has the same effect as skipping a coat.

Drying time between coats

Each product lists a recoat time. In Gwalior’s dry months paint dries faster, but in winter mornings and monsoon humidity it slows down. Recoating too early can leave the film soft and marked.

Before the painter starts: a short checklist

  • Fix leaks and damp first; paint will not stop water coming through a wall
  • Scrape loose and flaking paint; sand glossy patches so the new coat grips
  • Fill cracks, then prime repaired spots and any bare plaster
  • Use putty only where the wall is uneven, and sand it smooth
  • Cover floors and furniture; remove switch plates and fittings
  • Note the shade code of every tin, so a later top-up matches

Questions to ask your painter before work starts

  • Which walls need scraping, primer or putty, and which do not?
  • How many coats of each product are included in the price?
  • Who supplies material, and will you show me the sealed tins and shade codes?
  • How will furniture, floors and fittings be protected?
  • How many days will the job take, and how long between coats?
